Taking steps to integrate successfully into Québec

Your sponsor (group of two to five persons or non-profit organization) has made a commitment to assist you. Don’t hesitate to call on them if you need help.

Learning French

French is the official language of Québec. You will need it to go shopping, get a job, talk to your children’s teacher and make new friends.

If you do not speak French, you can register for a free French course shortly after arriving in Québec.

Enrolling in school

School attendance is compulsory for all children aged 6 to 16. Public education is free, with the exception of university. Since French is the official language of Québec, your children will attend a French-language school.

Finding a job

If you already have sufficient knowledge of French, or as soon as you are able to express yourself in French, you will have access to employment services to help you look for a job. These services will help you take stock of your employment situation and prepare you for the Québec job market.

Adult education or continuing education

Even if you are an adult, you may decide to go to school or return to school to improve your chances of finding a job or out of personal interest. Many full-time and part-time adult education programs are offered during the day and in the evenings. Sometimes a small fee is charged. Assistance is available to help you choose the program that meets your needs.

  PRACTICAL ADVICE
A community organization will help you while you settle in, but you can also use the Learning about Québec guide. It will be useful in guiding you through the integration process. It is available in French, English and Spanish.
