Apply to sponsor a close relative

3 important steps

Here are three important steps to follow to sponsor a close relative and information to help you understand the process. The person you are sponsoring must also complete certain procedures.

  1. File a sponsorship application to the Government of Canada (specifically Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada – IRCC).
  2. Submit an undertaking application to the Government of Québec.

  3. Ask the person you are sponsoring to complete certain procedures, i.e., apply for permanent selection and permanent residence.

To submit your undertaking application, you must first receive confirmation from IRCC that your sponsorship application is admissible. Nevertheless, prepare your undertaking application in advance, including the sponsored person’s application for a selection certificate with all required documents, so that you are ready to send it to Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration as soon as you receive your response from IRCC.

Immigration is a shared jurisdiction between the governments of Québec and Canada. In the case of family reunification (sponsoring a close relative), the person who wishes to sponsor a relative must meet the requirements of both governments.
