Professions governed by the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF – financial market authority)

In order to practise certain professions in Québec’s financial sector, it is necessary to obtain a representative’s certificate issued by the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF). This certificate is required for the use of certain reserved titles or abbreviations, such as insurance representative (agent or broker), securities representative, group savings plan representative, claim adjuster and financial planner.

The AMF applies the laws and regulations governing Québec’s financial sector. This includes all activities related to the production and distribution of financial products and services for consumer marketing purposes, particularly in the area of insurance, securities, deposit institutions (except chartered banks) and the distribution of financial products and services in general. The AMF’s mission is, among other things, to ensure the protection of the public with respect to activities regulated by law and, more specifically, to govern access to certain professions in the financial sector.
