Obtaining recognition of your competencies by a Québec employer

First, check to see if the job you plan to hold is regulated in Québec by visiting this website: Qualifications Québec (in French only).

If your profession or trade is not regulated, you can start your job search in your field and apply directly to potential employers.

Employers may evaluate the competencies you acquired abroad based on their knowledge of the activity sector in question.

Or, employers may request a comparative evaluation for studies done outside Québec in order to better understand your diploma. The comparative evaluation is not an equivalency of the diploma you obtained abroad, however it indicates your level of schooling and the area of training in Québec that corresponds to your studies. Make sure to have this evaluation on hand to facilitate your job search.

Preparing for your job search

The titles attributed to jobs can vary from one country to the next. On your resumé, it is preferable to emphasize the description of your work-related tasks and the competencies you developed abroad.

To make sure you are well prepared, consult the Job Search Tips for information on:

  • preparing your resumé
  • preparing for an interview
  • the steps to finding a job

Job search program

Are you looking for your first work experience in Québec in your trade or profession?

If you are an immigrant and you have not yet had a chance to work in your field in Canada or the United States, the Employment Integration Program for Immigrants and Visible Minorities (PRIIME) could provide you with an employment opportunity.
