Territory and main cities

Laval has the particular feature of being both a region and a city. Québec’s fourth largest city, located on the island north of Montréal, Laval boasts a diversified and dynamic economy. With 30% of its territory devoted to agricultural production, Laval offers a balanced living environment of green space, commercial sectors and residential neighbourhoods. At the intersections of several major roads and railway lines, this region is easily accessible and serves as the hub between Montréal and regions to the north.

Economy and employment

The employment forecasts for the region of Laval are excellent. The active population is growing faster than the total population. Alongside the manufacturing, commercial and residential sectors, new fast-growing sectors are emerging, such as biotechnology, information sciences and agri-food production and processing. In the service sector, employment growth rates will be strongest in the areas of business management, professional, scientific and technical services, health care and trade.

Portrait of immigration

Through various organizations and associations, the Laval region offers a range of services to help new immigrants integrate and find employment. The Greek, Italian, Portuguese and Haitian communities represent over one-third of the immigrant population in Laval and have long contributed to the region’s socioeconomic growth and cultural diversity. Over the last decade the immigration portrait has evolved with the arrival of immigrants, particularly from France, Morocco, Lebanon and Romania.
