Police services

Police forces ensure the safety of citizens and respect for the law.

Police can be called on for a wide range of situations, including:

  • Various emergencies;
  • Road accidents;
  • Assault (sexual or other) or harassment;
  • Conjugal violence;
  • Theft or fraud;
  • Disappearance of a child;
  • Minor crimes or wrongful acts.

Police officers are obligated to intervene in a judicious manner, without  undue use of force. They must also:

  • justify their intervention, unless the person is committing a flagrant offence;
  • respect the right to receive assistance from a lawyer.

During a police intervention, you have the right to contest the intervention or lodge a complaint.

Find out about civil security, crime prevention, community policing and the Québec police force by contacting the Ministère de la Sécurité publique.

Find out about the police code of conduct as well as how to lodge a complaint with the Commission à la déontologie policière.
