Bridging open work permit comes into effect for holders of a Certificat de sélection du Québec

August 31, 2021 – As of today, temporary foreign workers who reside in Québec and have been selected by Québec as skilled workers can, under certain conditions, apply for a bridging open work permit (BOWP). This permit will allow them to hold a job of their choice while waiting to obtain their permanent residence.

To have access to a bridging open work permit, temporary foreign workers must:

  • have submitted a permanent residence application as the principal applicant and as a skilled worker in Québec to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC);
  • have an acknowledgment of receipt confirming that this permanent residence application has been received by the federal government and that it is complete.

The spouse or de facto spouse of the applicant can also obtain an open work permit if he or she is included in the applicant’s permanent residence application, regardless of the principal applicant’s skill level in his or her profession.

This new measure is designed to increase the mobility of workers selected by Québec and to facilitate the steps they must take to remain employed while awaiting permanent residence.

For more information about the BOWP, consult the website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
