French courses offered to immigrants by the Governement of Québec

More people are eligible and financial assistance has been increased!

Since July 1, 2019, a greater number of immigrants have access to free French courses offered by the Government of Québec, and to increased financial assistance.

What’s new for full-time courses (25 or 30 hours per week)

Since July 1, 2019:

  • Anyone holding an immigration status, regardless of how long they have lived in Québec, can take a free full-time French course and obtain financial assistance offered for participating in this course. Prior to this, only immigrants living in Québec for less than five years were eligible.
  • Financial assistance for immigrants registered in a full-time French course offered by the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Diversité et de l’Inclusion (MIDI) has also increased, from $141 to $185 per week.

Transportation and commuting allowances have not changed, nor have child care allowances for a maximum amount of $25 per child or dependent person, per day of training.

What’s new for part-time courses (4, 6, 9 or 12 hours per week)

Since July 1, 2019, immigrants taking a part-time French course are entitled to:

  • Financial assistance of $15 per day of training, a first!
  • A child-care allowance, which has increased from $7 to $9 per day of training, per child or dependent person.

What’s new for individuals temporarily residing in Québec

Since July 1, 2019:

  • Temporary workers, foreign students, as well as their spouse, are eligible for full-time and part-time French courses as well as the accompanying financial assistance.

Prior to this, individuals who were temporarily residing in Québec did not have access to in-class French courses offered by the Government of Québec.

What’s new for online courses

Since July 1, 2019:

  • Individuals temporarily residing in Québec and hold a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (Québec Acceptance Certificate) are eligible for the format with a tutor.

Prior to this, these individuals only had access to the self-training format. No financial assistance is provided for online French courses.
