Obligations as an employer

Since November 30, 2014, the federal government has made major changes to the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP), recently renamed Canada’s Caregiver Program. For more information on the program, visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.

The employment contract describes the employer’s obligations to the foreign worker. These include:

  • Providing decent living conditions by supplying meals and a private room that is properly furnished, heated, ventilated, and equipped with a working lock.
  • Providing a key to the residence and the security code.
  • Paying the salary at the agreed-upon frequency, as well as making the deductions and paying the fees prescribed by law.
  • Facilitating access to French courses outside normal working hours.
  • When stated in the contract, paying the foreign worker’s transportation costs between her country or province of residence and the place of work (one-way ticket).
  • Complying with all provisions of the Act respecting labour standards.
