Live-in caregiver – First application

Note:
– If the documents are written in a language other than French or English, they must be translated by a translator who is officially recognized in your country of residence. These documents must carry the translator’s seal and signature.

You must follow these four steps.

4 important steps

  1. You must find an employer in Québec who wishes to hire you temporarily. The employer who is ready to hire you must follow certain steps with the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles (MICC) and Service Canada. You must also meet the eligibility criteria.

  1. Once the employer’s job offer is confirmed, the MICC will send to you, by regular mail, the procedure for applying for a Québec Certificate of acceptance. The documents to be completed will be included in this mailing.


    Note:
    – Do not start preparing your application until you have received these instructions.
    – Your employer will send you a copy of the letter of the job offer confirmation letter issued jointly by the MICC and Service Canada.



  1. Once you have received the instructions from the MICC, you must assemble the following documents and send them to the MICC:
    – the Application for Certificate of acceptance (CAQ) for temporary work, duly completed, signed by you and accompanied by payment of the required fees for the review of your CAQ application;

    Note:
    – The fees required to review the CAQ application can be paid by your employer.
    – Only the form duly completed with your original signature will be accepted. Photocopies are not accepted.


    – a photocopy of your latest curriculum vitæ;
    – a certified copy of the original of your birth certificate;
    – a photocopy of your passport (page with your photo, information on your identity and your signature);
    – a certified copy from the educational institution that issued the diploma for the job field related to your application (care provider for children, the elderly or the disabled, or any related field) or a certified copy from the educational institution that issued your last  diploma and the corresponding transcript;

    Note:
    If your diploma and transcript do not prove that you studied in French or English, you must provide a certified copy of the originals of the results of an examination of your skills in French as a second language or English as a second language. You must have attained at least intermediate level. The following examinations are accepted:
    – the Test de connaissance du français pour le Québec (TCFQ) issued by the Centre international d’études pédagogiques (CIEP);
    – the Test d’évaluation du français adapté pour le Québec (TEFAQ) issued by the Chambre de commerce de l’industrie de Paris (CCIP);
    – the Test d’évaluation du français (TEF) issued by the Chambre de commerce de l’industrie de Paris (CCIP);
    – the  Test de connaissance du français (TCF) issued by the Centre international d’études pédagogiques (CIEP);
    – the International English Language Testing System (IELTS);
    – the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL);
    – the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC).


    – the original document or a certified copy of your work experience in this job field;

    Note:
    For your job experience to be recognized, it must:
    – have been legally acquired during the three years preceding submission of the application;
    – have been remunerated;
    – have been performed full time, without interruption, for a minimum period of six months;
    – have been performed in the field of homecare for children, the elderly or the disabled, or in any other related field.


    – the original of the Déclaration d’une aide familiale résidante ou d’un aide familial résidant duly completed and signed;
    – the original of the form Information additionnelle sur l’expérience de travail duly completed;
    – the original of the form Information additionnelle sur la formation professionnelle duly completed;
    – the original of the Live-in caregiver employment contract duly completed and signed by you and your employer.

    Note:
    You must assemble all of these documents and send them to the Direction de l'immigration économique – Québec, Service des travailleurs étrangers temporaires.



  2. If your application for a Québec Certificate of acceptance (CAQ) is accepted by the MICC, you will receive two copies of your CAQ. You must enclose with your application for a work permit one copy of your CAQ as well as the job offer confirmation letter issued to you by your employer. You must submit your application for a work permit to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada office for your country of residence within three months of the date of issue of your CAQ. Health and safety controls

If applicable, you must meet the Government of Canada’s health and safety requirements to obtain a work permit. If a medical examination is required, it must be performed by a physician designated by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and fees are applicable.

 

  USEFUL INFORMATION  
The timeframe for obtaining the documents authorizing you to work in Québec can be several months. This period can vary depending on your country of origin.  
     

Upon your arrival

  • At the airport: Once the immigration formalities with the federal government have been completed, you will be asked to proceed to the Immigration-Québec office to announce your arrival and obtain information on the services offered by the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles.
  • In the first days following your arrival:
    • Register with the Association des aides familiales du Québec. This will allow you to participate in an information session for new program participants and receive free assistance and advice.
    • Register for free French courses offered to newcomers by the MICC and its partners.
    • Submit your application to the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec as soon as possible. You will obtain a health insurance card that will give you access to medical care and hospitalization services. Note that coverage under this plan is usually granted for the duration of the validity of the work permit and is subject to a waiting period of three months.
