Driver's license

Temporary workers with a residence permit of less than six months may drive with a license from their country of origin for the duration of their stay in Québec.

Temporary workers with a residence permit of more than six months must have an international driver’s license to drive in Québec. They may therefore drive vehicles authorized by their international license for as long as their driver’s license and international license are valid. The driver’s license must always accompany the international license.

Temporary workers must apply for an international driver’s license in the country where they obtained their driver’s license.

Car insurance

All car owners must have liability insurance for property damage to another party.

Registration

Foreign workers who come to Québec with their vehicle have 90 days to register it. They must go to the offices of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) with the required documents (mechanical inspection certificate issued in Québec, a liability insurance policy taken out in Québec, proofs of identity such as a work permit, driver’s license
