Gathering together all the documents that will be useful during your stay
Some of the following documents are essential for your temporary settlement
in Québec, others, while not compulsory, could prove useful.
List of personal effects you are planning to bring
Proof of health insurance coverage
International driver’s licence
List of personal effects you are planning
to bring
As a foreign student, you are entitled to temporarily import your household
and personal items (furniture, dishes, appliances and automobiles) duty free,
if you plan to stay in Canada.
To do so, you must give the customs officer a list that clearly distinguishes
between the items you brought with you and those that will arrive later. It
is a good idea to have two copies of this list, preferably typewritten, and
to write down a description, model, serial number, where applicable, and the
value of these effects.

Proof of health insurance coverage
If you reside in Denmark, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal or
Sweden, find out from the organization providing health insurance coverage
in that country whether you are covered by a social security agreement between
that country and Québec.
If so, ask this organization to provide you with a proof of health insurance
coverage in that country.
Once you are in Québec, you will have to submit this document to your
educational institution as proof of your health insurance coverage. It should
also be enclosed with your application for a Québec health insurance
card.

International driver’s licence
If you hold a valid licence of the equivalent class, you are allowed to drive
an automobile or motorcycle for the length of your studies without holding
a Québec licence. However, any licence restrictions also apply in Québec.
If your driver's licence is neither in English nor in French, getting an International
driver’s licence is highly recommended. You must apply for this licence
in the country that issued your driver's licence, before leaving. However,
you must always have the country-of-origin driver's licence in your possession.
However, if you do obtain an international driver’s licence, always keep
both licences in your possession.
If you do not have a driver’s licence and would like to obtain one,
contact the Service d’information à la clientèle (customer
services) at the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec
(SAAQ) once you arrive in Québec.
