Application for Permanent Residence in Canada

Before an interview can be scheduled by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), the sponsored person and his or her family members must fill out the Generic Application Form for Canada (IMM 0008) and send it to a Canadian visa office abroad.

To accelerate the processing of your file, we recommend that you include the Application for Permanent Residence in Canada of the sponsored person with your sponsorship application.

NOTE: If the person you are sponsoring is coming from a territory served by the Canadian visa office in Nairobi, you must attach the Application for Permanent Residence in Canada to your sponsorship application.

Recommended procedure:

  • The sponsoring group sends the forms for the Application for Permanent Residence in Canada to the sponsored person.
  • The sponsored person fills out the forms and returns them to the sponsoring group, accompanied by all of the required documents and photos.
  • The sponsoring group submits the sponsorship undertaking accompanied by the sponsored person’s Application for Permanent Residence to the Direction de l’immigration familiale et humanitaire (DIFH) (Island of Montréal) or to the regional office serving his or her region. The DIFH then sends the complete application and the approved undertaking form to the appropriate Canadian visa office.

If the refugee you are sponsoring is coming from a territory other than the one served by Nairobi, you may follow the regular procedure, but you must realize that this procedure is usually much longer:

  • The DIFH sends the approved sponsorship undertaking to the appropriate Canadian visa office.
  • The appropriate Canadian visa office mails the Permanent Residence Application Kit to the sponsored person.
  • The sponsored person fills out all of the necessary forms and returns the application to the appropriate Canadian visa office.

You can obtain the Permanent Residence Application Kit which includes the instruction guide IMM 6000, the application form IMM 0008, appendices 1 and 2 as well as the authorization to communicate information on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.
