The person you are sponsoring will soon be joining you in Québec. Take advantage of this period to encourage your relative to prepare for his or her new life in Québec. In addition to facilitating integration into Québec society, this can also help the sponsored person save time, energy and money. Encourage the sponsored person to review the following procedure.

Procedure to help the sponsored person prepare for life in Québec

Your sponsor (guarantor) has advised you to prepare before your departure for Québec with the goal of making your integration easier. As soon as possible, use the tool Learning about Québec: Your Guide to Successful Integration. This guide will help you evaluate your needs, determine realistic goals and chose effective methods for achieving them. This is an essential tool for all new immigrants. Do not hesitate to take every possible step to ease your integration. The more informed you are about Québec and the earlier you take the necessary steps, the better equipped will you be upon arrival.

The tool Learning about Québec: Your Guide to Successful Integration recommends various steps you can take before you have even arrived in Québec. Depending on your personal and family situation, the following points could be helpful to you:

  • familiarize yourself with Québec society, its foundations and its values
  • find out about your responsibilities as well as those of the host society
  • improve your knowledge of French, if applicable
  • learn about the Québec job market and how to look for a job
  • start any necessary procedures with respect to a regulatory body governing a profession or trade, if applicable
  • request a comparative evaluation for studies done outside Québec, if applicable

Sponsored person already in Québec – If your application for permanent residence is being processed within Canada, you can have access to certain government services even before obtaining permanent residence. The Learning about Québec guide will help you to:

  • sign up for French courses offered by Ministère partners by presenting the letter from
    Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada confirming that your application for permanent residence is being processed within Canada.
  • obtain a Québec health insurance card from the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) by presenting your Québec Selection Certificate and your letter from
    Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada confirming that your application for permanent residence is being processed within Canada.
