Preventing and fighting fires

Taking a few basic precautions will help prevent fires, particularly in the winter when heating systems are working at full capacity. If you are responsible for maintaining your heating system, have it checked and have your chimney swept by a reliable company at least once a year. The fire prevention centre in your community can help you find one. Many fires are caused by the unsafe use of stoves or by careless smokers. Use cooking oil with caution and never smoke in bed.

Most municipalities require owners of rental buildings to equip each dwelling with a smoke detector. By warning you of a fire, these inexpensive devices can save lives and prevent considerable damage to you and your neighbours. Moreover, fire extinguishers are not only strongly recommended, they are sometimes required by municipal by-law. Firefighting services are free and provided by the municipality.

  PRACTICAL ADVICE

Should a fire break out:

  • Set off the building’s fire alarm system, if there is one.
  • Call the fire department immediately by dialling 911.

Contact your local fire department to find out more about fire prevention and what to do in case of fire.
