Main duties

  • Bricklayers lay bricks, concrete blocks, stone and other similar materials to construct or repair walls, arches, chimneys, fireplaces and other structures in accordance with blueprints and specifications.
  • In Québec, the occupation of bricklayer is regulated by the Commission de la construction du Québec. Obtaining a competency certificate is required to practise this occupation. Labour market information

  • Employment prospects for the 2009-2013 period are favourable in the Côte-Nord, Estrie, Laurentides and Nord-du-Québec regions.

Some figures

  • Approximately 5,000 persons practised the occupation of bricklayer or a related occupation in Québec in 2008, 99% of whom were men (compared to 53% for all occupations).
  • 90% of bricklayers and persons practising a related occupation were employed full time in 2008 (compared to 81% for all occupations).
  • The average gross annual income was $38,000 for full-time employment in 2005.
