Training in machining techniques in Québec

Training program

  • In the Québec education system, completion of this program requires 1,800 hours of secondary level vocational training, representing a total of 12 years of study.
  • This training leads to two occupations with good prospects for employment integration in Québec. They are:
    • Machinist and machining and tooling inspector (NOC 7231);
    • Machining tool operator (NOC 9511)

Occupations

Machinists and machining and tooling inspectors (NOC 7231)

Main duties

  • Machinists set up and operate a variety of machine tools to cut or grind metal, plastic or other materials to make or modify parts or products with precise dimensions. Machining and tooling inspectors inspect machined parts and tooling in order to maintain quality control standards.
  • In Québec, this occupation is not regulated.

Labour market information

  • Employment prospects for the 2009-2013 period are favourable throughout Québec.

  • Approximately 17,000 persons practised the occupation of machinist and machining and tooling inspector or a related occupation in Québec in 2008, 94% of whom were men (compared to 53% for all occupations).
  • 95% of machinists and machining and tooling inspectors and persons practising a related occupation were employed full time in 2008 (compared to 81% for all occupations).
  • The average gross annual income was $42,000 for full-time employment in 2005.

Machining tool operators (NOC 9511)

Main duties

  • Machining tool operators set up and operate or tend metal-cutting machines designed for repetitive machining work.  This unit group also includes workers who etch or chemically mill metal pieces. They are employed by metal products and other manufacturing companies and in machine shops
  • In Québec, this occupation is not regulated.

  • Employment prospects for the 2009-2013 period are acceptable throughout Québec.
