Main duties

  • Insurance underwriters study and evaluate insurance applications to establish the risk to be covered and set premiums and the extent of coverage based on company policies.
  • In Québec, this occupation is not regulated.

  • Employment prospects for the 2009-2013 period are favourable throughout Québec.

  • Approximately 3,000 persons practised the occupation of insurance underwriter or a related occupation in Québec in 2008, 65% of whom were women (compared to 47% for all occupations).
  • 93% of insurance underwriters and persons practising a related occupation were employed full time in 2008 (compared to 81% for all occupations).
  • The average gross annual income was $51,000 for full-time employment in 2005.

Insurance agents and brokers (NOC 6231)

Main duties

  • Insurance agents and brokers sell life insurance, car insurance, property insurance, health insurance and other types of insurance to individuals, businesses and public establishments.
  • In Québec, the practice of certain occupations in the financial sector, particularly in insurance, requires a representative’s certificate issued by the Autorité des marchés financiers.
