University education

University education constitutes the second level of higher education. The duration of study varies according to the discipline and level chosen.

Undergraduate studies lead to a bachelor’s degree (three to four years of study), a certificate or a diploma (one or two years of study). Graduate studies lead to a master’s degree (usually two years of study), a certificate or a diploma (usually one year of study). Doctoral studies lead to a PhD degree after three years of study or more. Universities are very autonomous and define their own study, teaching and research programs, determine admission and registration requirements, and issue their own diplomas.

Québec is home to several universities, higher learning centres and research institutes, concentrated in Montréal, Québec City and Sherbrooke. University studies are also accessible in most regions through the Université du Québec network present in Rouyn-Noranda, Saguenay, Gatineau, Rimouski and Trois-Rivières, as well as through Télé-université.
