Clothing to bring or buy

Prepare yourself adequately to settle in or take an exploratory trip to Québec by taking into account the season when you arrive. Depending on the time of the year, plan to have warm or lighter clothing. By dressing properly, you will enjoy the pleasures of Québec life even more.

Summer

June, July, August

In June, the temperature is normally mild. It is followed by July heat that can continue into August, even though the evenings and nights become cooler.

Light clothing is necessary:

  • shorts or cropped pants, t-shirt, sun dress
  • lightweight pants, fleece-lined sweater (for cooler evenings)
  • bathing suit
  • hat and glasses for protection from the sun

Autumn

September, October, November

Towards mid-September, the days begin to get cooler. They can be rainy. At the end of October, there can even be snowfall. This is the time to change your car tires.

Warmer clothing necessary:

  • wind-breaker or jacket, pants
  • umbrella
  • waterproof boots or shoes
  • gloves or mittens
  • scarf

In November, winter gradually sets in. The days and nights are much colder and it snows. It is time to prepare for the cold season.

Warm clothing necessary:

  • lined winter coat and pants
  • warm boots
  • hat
  • gloves or mittens
  • scarf

Winter

December, January, February

Depending on the year, the cold can become more intense starting in December or not until January. The snow covers everything and if you are properly clothed, it is pleasant to engage in winter sports and activities.

Warm clothing necessary:

  • lined winter coat and pants
  • wool sweater
  • warm boots
  • warm socks
  • hat
  • gloves or mittens
  • scarf, muffler

Spring

March, April, May

March often brings the last snowfalls. The weather gradually begins to warm up.

Warm clothing necessary:

  • lined winter coat and pants
  • warm boots
  • hat
  • gloves
  • scarf

Depending on the year, mild weather will begin in either April or May. Spring typically brings rainfall.

A popular saying warns against prematurely putting away your warm clothing in April. It is preferable to change very gradually into lighter clothing in the spring.

Lighter clothing necessary:

  • coat
  • umbrella
  • waterproof boots
  • gloves
  • scarf
