Provincial government

Québec has its own government that administers the laws passed by the National Assembly.

The National Assembly is composed of 125 members who represent and defend the interests of the population in the ridings where they were elected.

General elections are usually held every four years. The political party with the most elected members forms the government. The leader of the winning party becomes the Premier or head of government.

The National Assembly legislates on all matters under its jurisdiction, in particular, education, health, justice, natural resources and municipal affairs.

In terms of immigration, the sharing of responsibility between Québec and Canada is established by an accord. Québec has sole responsibility for:

  • selecting permanent immigrants destined for its territory,
  • setting immigration volumes, and
  • integrating immigrants

Created in 1791, Québec’s Parliament is the one of the oldest in the world, after that of Great Britain.
