Immigrating to Québec to work
Selection and admission of candidates
Through an agreement reached with Canada, Québec is solely responsible for selecting immigrants who want to settle on its territory to work. The candidates are selected by the Bureau d'immigration du Québec (Québec immigration office) that covers their country. Canada then grants them a permanent residence visa if they meet the Canadian health and safety conditions.
Following a decision by the governmentdecision published in the Gazette officielle du Québec on March 27, 2013, the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles is renewing its rules relating to the intake of applications according to immigration class.
Candidates are selected by Québec based on their training, their work experience, their age, their knowledge of the French language and their socio-economic ability to adapt. The candidate’s professional skills must be in line with the current Québec labour market employment opportunities or show a high adaptation or professional mobility potential.
To prove their language proficiency, worker candidates must provide the results of a standardized test, even if French or English is their mother tongue.
Candidates must also possess sufficient funds to support themselves, as well as the family members accompanying them, during at least the first three months of residence in Québec.
Preparing before departure
In order to facilitate integration, it is recommended to be well prepared before your departure for Québec. The waiting period before obtaining the visa issued by Canada is the ideal time to start certain procedures.
Knowledge of the French language
The ability to express themselves in French allows candidates to develop a network of contacts and increases their professional opportunities. It is an essential requirement for the integration of all immigrants. To this end, it is preferable to acquire good knowledge of French before arriving in Québec.
The Québec labour market is constantly evolving, requires certain professional mobility and rewards those who can adapt. Experience and training are important, but the candidate’s personality and initiative remain major assets in finding employment. Being adequately prepared and looking for prospects before arriving in Québec considerably facilitate the employment integration process.
In Québec, access to certain professions and trades is regulated. You must therefore find out as quickly as possible about the requirements for practicing your profession or trade.
